At Bearkery® we have one simple opinion regarding High Fructose Corn Syrup: High Fructose Corn Syrup is evil. Our bakery, in Gainesville Florida, uses ingredients you can pronounce to create amazing baked goods that taste incredible. One thing you will never find in our Bearkery® products is High Fructose Corn Syrup.
What is High Fructose Corn Syrup?
Let’s start with the basics. High Fructose Corn Syrup (or HFCS for short) is a manufactured sweetener that mimics the taste of sugar. To tell you about HFCS, we need to first discuss sugar.
Sugar (cane sugar or beet sugar) is almost pure sucrose. Sucrose occurs naturally and can be harnessed using a variety of methods.
High Fructose Corn Syrup uses fructose (which is very similar yet different to sucrose). Some scientists believe that the difference between fructose and sucrose causes the human body to process these compounds differently.
Why is High Fructose Corn Syrup commonly used?
It’s absolutely scary how many of your foods have HFCS in the ingredient list. In fact, take a look in your pantry and see how many of your goods have HFCS as an ingredient. You’ll be shocked.
Bottom line: High Fructose Corn Syrup is much cheaper than sugar.
Why is it used so much? It’s more profitable to use HFCS than sugar.
Between the corn subsidies and sugar tariffs, high fructose corn syrup became the sweetener of choice by most manufactures. By 1984, even most soft drinks were made with HFCS rather than using sugar (except in Mexico and Europe). The use of HFCS is so heavy that in 2010 the USDA estimated the average American consumed more than 35 pounds of HFCS a year.
Bearkery® Says “NO” to HFCS
Bearkery® products do not use high fructose corn syrup. Besides being unnatural, we believe the research suggesting that high fructose corn syrup contributes to obesity worse than sugar.
We know that heavy use of sugars is not a great diet. That being said, a cookie now and then is a good thing. In fact, if it’s one of our cookies… it’s a great thing.
At Bearkery®, we want you to have the best possible baked goods. This means that we do not use High Fructose Corn Syrup, Crisco, shortening, or ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Taste the difference of the quality ingredients that goes into each of our baked goods.
